;Why We Put Our Appalachian Spring Water in a Can, Not a Bottle
When the students building Sweet Carolina Water sat down to choose packaging, plastic was the cheaper, easier, more familiar option. They picked aluminum instead. Here's the actual reasoning behind that decision, including the parts that aren't as simple as "cans good, plastic bad."
The case for aluminum
The numbers behind recycling rates are the clearest argument. In the U.S., plastic bottles get recycled at a rate hovering around 29 percent, and that's considered one of the better outcomes globally; worldwide, only a small fraction of all plastic ever produced has been recycled at all. Aluminum cans do meaningfully better: industry tracking from the Can Manufacturers Institute and the Aluminum Association puts the consumer recycling rate for aluminum cans at roughly double that of plastic bottles, and the average can in circulation already contains a large share of recycled metal.
Part of why that gap exists comes down to what happens after recycling. Plastic degrades each time it's reprocessed and can only be recycled a limited number of times before the material is no longer usable for a new bottle. Aluminum doesn't have that ceiling, a can recycled today can become a new can without losing structural quality, repeatedly, which is a big part of why so much of the aluminum ever mined is still in active use somewhere in the world.
The part that isn't so simple
It would be easy to stop there and call aluminum the clear winner, but that's not the whole picture. Producing virgin aluminum is energy-intensive and carbon-heavy, some estimates put the emissions from making a new can well above those of making a new plastic bottle. Aluminum is also heavier than plastic, which means more fuel burned in transportation and refrigeration along the supply chain.
The honest version of this story is that no packaging material is free of tradeoffs. Aluminum's advantage shows up over the long run, through recyclability and reuse, not in the first can off the line. That's the case sustainability researchers generally land on: aluminum tends to pull ahead once you account for how many times it actually gets recycled in practice, but it's not automatically the lower-impact choice in every scenario.
Why we made the call anyway
For a small, student-run operation building a brand from scratch, the long-run case won out. A can that can realistically be recycled again and again, with a recycling system already built around it, fit the mission better than a bottle that's more likely to end up in a landfill or break down into microplastics over time.
It also fit the bigger picture of how Sweet Carolina Water operates. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit run by Appalachian State students, the business isn't built to maximize margins, it's built to fund the next group of students who'll run it, while doing right by the place the water comes from. Packaging the water from a protected North Carolina spring in single-use plastic never sat right with the team building this from the ground up.
What you can do with your can
The honest answer to "is this sustainable?" is: more sustainable, not perfect — and the part that matters most happens after you finish the water. An aluminum can only delivers on its advantage if it actually gets recycled instead of thrown away. So when you finish a Sweet Carolina Water, toss the can in the recycling bin. That's the step that turns a good packaging decision into an actual one.
